Eclipse Aviation are a company that few outside the avaiation industry have heard of - yet. Eclipse are set to revolutionise the small jet market with the launch of the Eclipse 500 4 passenger jet. This jet is remarkable in that it is manufactured using techniques more akin to volume car production and this will enable the company to sell the jet for about $1.3million when it achieves planned FAA certification in 2006. That is roughly half the cost of the nearest direct competitor.
This will open up many new markets for the small jet, from corporate shuttles to air taxis services that will rival commercial airline fares. With orders for 1,400 aircraft already placed, and a break even figure of 500 jets a year, the future looks promising for this newcomer! Highlighting the use of advanced production techniques, the lip skins on the two engines are manufactured from 5083 alloy by Superform. After forming the parts are trimmed then polished.
