To celebrate its 100th Anniversary, Ford Motor Cars have relaunched that all time classic 1960’s American muscle car, and 3 times Le Mans winner, the GT. The new GT, whilst based on the original, is a completely new car for the 21st century, re-engineered from the ground up.
Ford plan to build 4,500 GT's from mid 2003 to mid 2005. The original cars had aluminium bodies, and the new vehicle carries over many of the styling attributes from the 1960's race cars - but with a modern slant. Superform USA won the contract to supply the exterior body panels against competition from conventional stampings. Superforming of aluminium sheet proved to be the most cost effective solution for this limited volume supercar. Superform USA has already completed the tooling build phase, and supplied sufficient panels to enable Ford to build the first three cars for the 100th Anniversary roll out in June of this year.
According to A.J.Barnes, Technical Vice President, " We were given an seemingly impossible challenge of designing and manufacturing all of the tooling and these first vehicle sets in just four months. Thanks to the dedication of our technical team and all of our tooling subcontractors, we delivered on time." Full scale supply of production panels will commence in the fourth quarter of 2003, and will reach a monthly peak of 180 car sets by mid 2004. |
