Hailed as one of the foremost designers of the 20th Century, Ron Arad was born in Tel Aviv and studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art before moving to London and the Architectural Association where he studied under Peter Cook, founder of Archigram. Throughout the ‘80’s he successfully established a unique design style using unorthodox combinations of materials and concepts. Towards the end of the decade he established Ron Arad Associates with Caroline Thorman in London, and in doing so expanded the horizons of the business into architecture and product design. During the ‘90’s Ron Arad Associates have opened facilities in Italy and worked on a huge variety of projects for major international manufacturers and retailers across the world. The range of the work and the use of new technology in creative ways make Ron Arad Associates one the worlds leading design businesses inspiring both industry and education alike. Ron is constantly looking for new ways to bring his creative ideas to life and that is where Superform comes in. "Superforming is such an exciting process!" says Ron. "It was so nice to find such a creative company who are amenable to new ideas, and I learnt a lot whilst working with them. They were working to some stencils we designed and seemed to enjoy the challenge, in fact they were very excited by it! I visited the factory in Worcester to see the process and got ideas just from being there.
I had wanted to use the Superform process for furniture and had to wait a while until a suitable project came up, the first was a chair. Another opportunity arose when I was commissioned to do a sculpture in Milan, and eventually I was able to transfer the shapes we had made into plastic.
I really enjoyed spending time at the factory just watching the process and was particularly fascinated by the bubble blowing part, which eliminates wrinkles and ensures a smooth finish. They are such easy people to work with and not afraid to experiment, I am looking forward to working with them in the future." For more details on Ron Arad visit his web site at www.ronarad.com. |
