Medical Equipment Pioneers Siemens Magnet Technology look set revolutionise the MRI Scanner market with the introduction of a new ‘open scanner’. This will be another first for SMT in a long line of innovative world firsts.
The company boast ‘more than 20 years of leadership in the development of MRI technology’ and it is clear from their impressive list of achievements, including six Queens Awards, that SMT are used to coming first. Since its introduction in the early 1980's, MRI has become accepted as the leading diagnostic imaging modality. SMT have supplied a majority of the magnets installed to date and are recognised as the world leaders in the development and production of MRI magnets. Speaking about the new Scanner, Project Manager Craig Marshall said, “The benefits of the open architecture are two fold. Firstly, the claustrophobic sensation associated with solenoid body scanners is removed. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, from a clinical perspective, the increased openness allows the radiologist to perform interventional applications, for example the insertion of catheters. Surgeons are also able to work within the magnetic field”. The Superform process was selected to produce the Radiation Shield for the scanner.
“We have been using Superform for about 6 years” Craig said. “There are a number of reasons we chose to use the process. In this case it was for dimensional and reproducibility reasons. Another process alternative for SMT is Metal Spinning, but or this project any variation in wall thickness and hardness can be problematic. For this project Superform was the best option as the process guarantees uniformity in all areas and even though the tooling costs were higher the assurance of consistent quality was the deciding factor”. |
