Hailed as one of the foremost designers of the 20th Century Ron Arad was born in Tel Aviv and studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art. He then moved to London and the Architectural Association where he studied under Peter Cook, founder of Archigram. In 1981, together with furniture entrepreneur Dennis Groves he founded his furniture workshop and showroom, One Off that became a well-known point of reference for British design of the 80’s.
As the name suggests, his pieces were made individually or in batches and were seen in the most fashionable retail interiors and offices. He made strong statements with his work using crumbling concrete, twisted steel and other industrial elements. By the end of the decade he had moved into interior design working on prestigious worldwide projects including the foyer of the Tel Aviv opera house, and furniture for manufacture by the Swiss company Vitra and the Milanese Poltronova. Ron is constantly looking for new ways to bring his creative ideas to life and that is where Superform comes in. “Superform is such an exciting process!” says Ron. “It was so nice to find such a creative company who are amenable to new ideas, and I learnt a lot whilst working with them. They were working to some stencils we designed and seemed to enjoy the challenge, in fact they were very excited by it! I visited the plant in Worcester to see the process and got ideas just from being there. I had wanted to use the Superform for furniture and had to wait a while until a suitable project came up, the first was a chair.
Another opportunity arose when I was commissioned to do a sculpture in Milan, and eventually I was able to transfer the shapes we had made into plastic. I really enjoyed spending time at the factory just watching the process and was particularly fascinated by the bubble blowing part, which eliminates wrinkles and ensures a smooth finish. They are such easy people to work with and not afraid to experiment, I am looking forward to working with them in the future.” |
