Superform and the Royal Grammar School Worcester take on the Greenpower Challenge to build and race an electric car.
This proved to be an excellent partnership with results in our first season of racing that were beyond everyone’s expectations. Under the guidance and leadership of Dave Edwards and Scott Riley from the Superform Design Department an aluminium/magnesium monocoque vehicle was designed and built in a very short period of time. The Magnesium Sheet was supplied by Magnesium Elektron and the construction phase went very well with parts manufactured by the pupils in school and, where specialist help was required, assembly at the Superform factory.
Racing took place in the period from May through to October with a break in July and August for the school summer break. The Tything Tornado team were placed third at Goodwood, first at Mallory Park, Bedford Autodrome and Aintree race track. The team were awarded a prize for the best

engineered vehicle at the Goodwood heat and picked up £500 in prize money at the Bedford Heat.
Winning the Greenpower 2010 Championship hinged on our place in the final at Goodwood in October. The team had picked up maximum points from the heats entered during the season. A serious mechanical fault due to the electric motor prevented the team finishing the final race leaving the team with a very creditable fourth place in the championship.
The Design and Technology Department at RGS Worcester intend to build on the foundations laid in this first season. The car will be developed and improved during the 2011 season to make it even more competitive.
Superform & the Luxfer Group look forward to forging closer links with the Royal Grammer School and look forward to an exciting new race season.
