Principles of Diaphragm Forming for Composites

Superform pioneered the diaphragm forming process for aluminum components where a single alloy sheet of a superplastic grade alloy (such as 2004SPF) is used as a forming "blanket" to form non SPF alloys.

Having developed this successfully in the world's leading aircraft, we modified the process specifically for the needs of forming thermoplastic composite materials.

Instead of using a single diaphragm, the composite sheet is sandwiched between two aluminum sheets which act as restricting surfaces keeping the composite fiber matrix intact, inhibiting buckling and bunching.
