5083 is an Al-Mg-Mn alloy developed for applications requiring a weldable moderate strength alloy having good corrosion resistance. As such it is an excellent all round alloy ideal for many applications.

Superformed components using 5083 alloy sheet are supplied in the O temper and offer many advantages over parts fabricated from 1200 or 3000 series and other 5000 series alloys. Simple or complex three dimensional shapes can be manufactured as one piece formings with “A” class surface finish making 5083 particularly suitable for automotive, rail, architectural and marine applications.

5083 allows a good compromise between formability and corrosion resistance, combined with moderate strength. Typical applications include transportation and construction.

Superforming of 5083 is performed at a temperature between 450 and 500ºC. Air pressure is applied to the sheet to force it at a controlled strain rate over or into a single surface tool using either the cavity or bubble forming techniques.
